Deserving of its reputation as a state of
great natural beauty, Maine is an outdoor
lover's haven. Parks abound with hiking
trails, beaches, historic forts and
lighthouses. Intoxicate your senses in a
field of flowers or a pine forest. Bicycle
down a quiet path winding along the
shoreline. Ride a raft through tumultuous
white water or sit by a brook and listen to
the trickle of the water as you relax in the
cool silence around you. Whatever your
pursuit, from recreation to meditation,
Maine's natural beauty provides a memorable
setting for all your outdoor activities.
Many
people from outside Maine look on native
Mainers as abounding in common sense and
down-to-earth values. Others don't even know
where Maine lies on the map. In any case
there is a mystique surrounding Maine which
makes it a special place to seek out the
restorative powers of nature.
Maine offers sporting enthusiasts some of
the finest recreational opportunities in the
country. Get your heart racing with the
thrill of white-water rafting. Cast your
line and reel in "that big one". Take a
canoe out at dawn to watch a moose take a
morning dip.
-
Outdoor sports abound. In summer or fall
climb one of the foothills of the White
Mountains and see all the way to the
ocean. Grab a pick, hammer and magnifying
glass and go rock hounding for minerals
and gems among the quarries of Oxford
county. For the quieter tastes there is a
visit to the fascinating museum at Shaker
Village in Poland Spring, the only active
community of Shakers in the country. The
Jones Museum of Glass and Ceramics,
located on Douglas Hill in Sebago, offers
changing exhibitions of glass,
earthenware.
